FERPA is a U.S. federal law that protects student education records held by schools that receive federal funding. Families and educators often ask about it, so this page explains what it covers.

Whether FERPA applies to Little Lobos Academy — a parent-controlled platform used by families, homeschoolers, educators, and therapists — is pending legal review. We do not claim FERPA compliance.

What FERPA generally covers

FERPA gives parents (and later, students themselves) rights over education records kept by covered schools: the right to inspect records, request corrections, and control certain disclosures.

It primarily binds schools and districts, and can extend to vendors acting on a school's behalf. This is a plain-language description, not legal advice.

How Little Lobos Academy fits the picture

Today, Little Lobos Academy is used directly by families: parents create the accounts, own the data, and supervise all use. In that setup, the parent already holds the access and control FERPA is designed to guarantee.

Homeschool records are generally the family's own records rather than a covered school's records — though rules vary, and this is exactly the kind of question our legal review will settle.

What we store about students

Student data on the platform is deliberately light: a first name, learning progress, and activity attempts — all created under a parent's account.

We store no grades from outside schools, no disciplinary records, and no official transcripts.

Parents' access and control

Parents can view their children's progress in the platform, manage or remove student profiles, and delete the family account entirely — see our Account Deletion page.

These controls exist by design, independent of whether FERPA formally applies.

If schools or therapists use the platformpending legal review

If a school, district, or therapy practice ever uses Little Lobos Academy with students on an institution's behalf, different obligations could apply, and formal agreements may be required.

Those arrangements — and any FERPA-related commitments — will be defined with legal counsel before we support institutional deployments.
